About This Role

To plan, supervise, and coordinate mobile crane operations, rigging and lifting activities into designated site positions, in a safe and efficient manner.

In This Role You Will:

Continuous Improvement

  • Measure and report on overall equipment and infrastructure performance.
  • Provide input into continuous improvements of processes and systems through the identification of opportunities.
  • Support troubleshooting, identification and evaluation of root causes of failures, to improve crane availability and performance.
  • Review work execution performance of the team to identify gaps and take necessary corrective actions.

  • Oversee the booking process for cranes and related machinery.
  • Conceptualise, plan and develop critical lift plans and conduct other pre-lift risk assessments.
  • Supervise the assembly of heavy mobile crane fleets.
  • Provide final sign-off for operation on assembled cranes.
  • Develop crane-related budgets and monitor costs.
  • Collaborate with Operations Supervisors on the best approach to get tasks done without affecting production.

 

Crane Operation and Supervision

  • Manage and supervise crane and rigging operations.
  • Supervise and provide detailed technical expertise and guidance on critical lifts taking place on the mine site.
  • Supervise and assist Crane Operators to adhere to daily pre-start check policy.
  • Supervise Crane Operators in their conduct of monthly inspections on the machines.
  • Oversee that the Crane Operators document and file inspection reports.
  • Supervise all crane related activity across the mine site.
  • Supervise crane operating works at the decant area (tailings).
  • Supervise crane operating works at the underground project.
  • Supervise mill liners movement during liner change out.
  • Train and hold Crane Operators accountable to safe operations and practices.
  • Act in the capacity of custodian for maintaining all lifting equipment and machinery registers for certifications, repairs and inspections.

 

Health and safety Management

  • Accept personal responsibility for the health and safety of every employee under or assigned to his / her supervision.
  • Provide hands-on assistance during operations activities and ensuring that safe work practices are followed.
  • Verify that all activities meet strict statutory requirements.
  • Champion critical safety standards for cranes and lifting.
  • Conduct periodic safety meetings and inspections.
  • Attend monthly safety inspection and meetings.

Additional Responsibilities

Maintenance and Repairs

  • Oversee the conditions of cranes and their maintenance schedules.
  • Schedule call-outs for cranes on-site and coordinate.
  • repairs for breakdowns to reduce downtime.
  • Confirm that all relevant load tests are carried out.
  • Make sure all crane and rigging gears are certified to comply with minimum legal requirements.
  • Make sure that the cranes and equipment are in safe working condition.
  • Conduct checks and maintain all overhead hoists onsite.
  • Record any maintenance work carried out on the over-crane logbook.
  • Dismantling and assembling of crawler cranes if moving from one site to another.

 

Staff Supervision

  • Liaise with Maintenance Supervisors and outline the training needs and requirements of the maintenance workforce.
  • Participate in the development of training approaches and facilitate training relating to crane operations.
  • Supervise and manage supporting Crane contractor works.
  • Supervise allocated staff member(s) by:
    •     prioritising and allocating tasks/responsibilities.
    •     checking and controlling the quality of work outputs.
    •     providing on-the-job training, mentoring and coaching.
    •     performing the first level of performance appraisal.
    •     recommending further / relevant training courses and development actions.
    •     disciplining poor performance or actions (first level of disciplinary).
    •     approving leave (first signature) and
    •     enhancing communication with staff through regular feedback, contact, meetings and briefings.

 

Work Scheduling and Allocation 

  • Develop daily work schedule and assign work to the Crane Operators to expedite workflow and accomplish high-priority tasks, as needed.
  • Establish short-term activities directed toward work continuity.
  • Exercise considerable judgment in establishing job priorities.

  • Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Work Environment: The noise level in the field work environment is frequent. Occasional exposure to noise, fumes, sharp edges, dust, pinch-points, vibration, slippery surfaces.
  • Incumbent is expected to follow the Clear-20 Rule with respect to accident hazards.
  • Incumbent is expected to possess a high degree of continuous concentration during the execution of tasks.

Your Training, Skills & Experience Checklist

Formal Qualification (including Professional Registrations):

  • MVT II (Motor Vehicle Technician) or its equivalent.
  • Crane Operator Certification of Competency.

Additional Knowledge:

  • Advanced knowledge of maintenance principles and industry standards.
  • Advanced knowledge of the work management process.
  • Advanced knowledge of planning and scheduling.
  • An equipment Operating License (E&F) is essential.

 

Experience:

  • Minimum of 6 – 8 years’ crane operation experience in a process plant or large scale multi pit operations.
  • Minimum of 2 – 3 years’ supervisory experience.

 

Technical Skills:

  • Advanced communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong computer literacy skills – MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook).
  • Strong information monitoring and management skills.
  • Strong planning, organising and prioritising skills.
  • Strong coaching and mentoring skills.
  • Strong facilitation skills.
  • Ability to conduct crane calibrations for correct lifting with load cell.
  • Ability to operate crawler crane for the lifting of heavy equipment.
  • Ability to operate Grove Crane GRT880, GRT165 and GMK5200. All and Rough Terrain Cranes respectively.
  • Ability to operate elevated work platform (EWP)
  • Ability to operate crane-mounted truck (HiaB Truck)
  • Ability to pass part lines of all cranes.
  • Ability to service overhead cranes.
  • Ability to operate overhead hoist for lifting heavy equipment around mill area (i.e. motors, pinions, gearboxes).
